NOTE
Charles started his naval service 24th Jan 1888 & initial training at H.M.S. St. Vincent, Portsmouth & demobed 18th Sept. 1920. His basic training may have taken place at
St. Vincent, Forton Road, Gosport during 88 to 91. Although his naval record
here suggests he may have been there since 15 yrs (1885-86) so not quite sure.
Judging by his record of service he wasn't the model Seaman being in trouble for desertion (twice), insubordination, breaking out of ship, smuggling & stealing but still managed to stay in the Navy for 32 yrs on various ships such as, H.M.S. Pembroke, Victory, Majestic & Galatea. He never rose above A/B Seaman.
At time of marr. Charles was liv. at Sailor's Home, Mearns St. Aberdeen. By declaration in presence of Arthur Broadbent, 4 Hammersmith Road, Aberdeen, and Isabella Theresa Gauld (Broadbent) his wife residing there. Death as cert. by M.W.Keith, M.B., Ch.B. Informant D.Truman, Head Attendant.
The proprietor of 14 Wellington St., was Mrs Isabella Broadbent, wife of Arthur Broadbent, spirit dealer at No. 18. (No. 18 was a bar). According to the Aberdeen City Valuation Roll Entries in 1921/22 Charles Henry FORD (with other tenents) lived here until 1932. Although he died in 1931 his name is still recorded for the years 1932/33. There is no mention of Jeannie FORD (neé Merson), his wife, until 1933/34, her name is recorded as 'Jane' FORD and in brackets is (Widow). She stayed there for at least a further year until 1934/35.
4 Hammersmith Road is no longer there.
