NOTE

Melvina was born c 1852 in Illinois, USA & died in 1943. She was the second daughter of Abel Leighton and Hannah Moore. Liv. at Eastern, Otter Tail, Minnesota (1880) with family, his mother & two brothers Samuel & George & later at Village of Eagle Bend, Todd Co., Minnesota (1900) next door to his son William. Harry died in infancy. Melvina is recorded at Wykeham Twp, Todd, Minnesota in 1910 with sons: Samuel, Frank, Walter & Fred.

Charles & family were recorded at Eastern, Otter Tail Co., Minnesota in a census dated, 1 May 1885. His brother, James Cossentine & his family were living close by. The census of 1895 records the family living at Eagle Bend, Todd Co., Minnesota & finally living in the same area in the census of 2 Jun 1905.

"I don't have anything on Melvina's children. I have been trying to track her and her half-brother's (Stephen Douglas Leighton) father, Abel Leighton. Abel was married 2 times. The first to Hannah Moore in Hamilton County, Ohio. I can document 3 children from that marriage. Israel, Eliza, and Melvina. Abel then married Elsie (Moore) Mason. She had 4 living children already; William A. Mason, John M. Mason, Mary Mason, and Abel Whipple Mason. After they married, they had 3 more children. Irvin, Stephen Douglas (my grnadfather) and Clara Etta. I have been searching all over for Abel's parents and birthplace. The only info I have is that he was born in Maine. I believe it was still part of Massachusets at the time he was born, about 1815." (By Bev O'Toole)
