NOTE

Williamina was born c 1858 at Banff. Banff. & died before 1930. Her parents were William Coutts & Helen Hossack. David may have been recorded living at ..... Cottage, Leytonstone, Gtr London in the 1871 census.

The family was living at Elko, Cattaraugus, New York in the 1900 census. The census records an immigration year of 1884/89, although I couldn't find them on any passenger list.

The 1910 census records the family living at Newbury, Merrimack, New Hampshire & later David & Williamina were living alone at Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York in 1920.

David, now a widow, was living in the same area with his son, James & his family.

David left home at the age of 15 and traveled to London where he became a bookkeeper on the London docks. Later he went to work for the British East India Co. and lived in Rangoon for over 15 years. I know that at one point he ran a gold mine for them. My mother has a gold nugget from this mine. On a furlough home to Scotland, he met Minnie Coutts and decided to marry. Minnie came from a prominent family in Banff. Her father was Provost of Banff and a solicitor to the local Duke, whose name escapes me at the moment. They married and moved to Glasgow where they produced 3 children in short order (Helen, James A. and William.) David met a US businessman at his club. Mr. Hay convinced David that there was great opportunity in the US and as two brothers were already there (Bob and Alexander), he and Minnie made the move. Minnie was pregnant with son David when they sailed. Son David always liked to joke that he was smuggled into the US under his mother’s skirts! David ran several large estates, became a veterinarian and bred and raced horses. Mother remembers that he was very Anglicized and spoke with a British accent. (Note provided by Faith Willis)
