NOTE

Alexander McGregor is the 'reputed' father of Donald McGregor. Last name has also been recorded as 'McGrigor'.

Jessie, a Dom Serv, was born c 1834 at Cromdale, Moray. Her parents were William McKenzie, Tailor & Margaret Anderson. She never married but she had at least 2 illigitimate daus., Marjory Fraser in 1867 & Mary Ann Fraser in 1870.

OPR for Cromdale, Inverallan & Advie, Ref 128B/3, Frame 528 "Donald son of Alexander McGrigor Labourer in Lynmore in fornication with Mary Munro residing at Grantown born in March 1832 and baptized 24 Sept 1833."

Donald was recorded as a Ploughman (ag, Lab) at Millon Of Dellifure, Cromdale, Inverallan and Advie in the 1861 census.

Liv. & worked at Blairmore, Cromdale (1881 census), but was dwelling at Lynemore, Cromdale at time of marriage. Donald and Elizabeth were marr. after Banns according to the forms of the established Church of Scotland. Signed H.D.McQueen & witnessed by Donald Fraser & William Sim.

The family was living at Blairmore Cottage No 1, Cromdale and Advie, Moray in the 1891 census. Donald & Jessie are recorded at Dellifure Cottage, Cromdale and Advie in 1901. Also present was visitor Mary Adam & Grandsons, James & Donald Adam.

Reference 128/2, Year 1911, Parish Inverallan, Entry 7: Donald McGregor, Labourer, married to Janet McKenzie. 24th January 1911, 8am, Parish Cottages, Grantown-on-Spey, Male, 85. Father: Alexr McGregor, Farmer, deceased. Mother: Bella (sic) McGregor, maiden surname Munro, deceased. Cause: Morbus Cordus, unknown duration, Pneumonia, 6 days. Informant: Isabella Meldrum, her mark, Matron of parish Cottages, Present. Registered: January 24th 1911, Grantown-on-Spey.

There are two points to make about this death certificate. Firstly, it gives Donald’s wife’s first name as Janet, not Jessie. Jessie was a short form for Janet at that time. Secondly, it gives the first name of his mother as Bella when this should be Mary. I checked every other possible matching death and this was the only one I found that could possibly be for the right Donald McGregor (assuming he died in Scotland), so I believe that the informant made a mistake with Donald’s mother’s first name.
