NOTE

Henry, a British Navy Coastguard (Revenue Cutters)/Custom's Officer, was born c 1796 at Lansallos, Cornwall & died in 1861. His parents were John Pearce & Catherine Carne.

The family was living at Arbor Place (?), Stepney, Middlesex in the 1841 census & later at 37 Dempsey St., Stepney in 1851. Also present was dau., Catherine (Bartlett) & her family.

The 1861 census records Hannah & Henry living at 26 Dempsey St., Stepney with daus., Elizabeth & Selina. Also present was dau., Mary Ann (Thomas) & her family.

Henry and Hannah were married at Stoke Dameral in Devon, which was the nearest Church to Plymouth, which I have found is where the Revenue Cutter Drake was stationed. Henry Pearce had joined the Revenue Cutters, which became the Coastguard in (I believe) the 1820's. After their marriage Henry was transferred to the South West coast of Ireland, Cork and Kerry, and was moved every few months from Coastguard station to station. Again fortunately the family bible comes to my rescue and lists all their children. My direct ancestor Samuel was born on the day Henry was officially transferred to the next station, and I have often wondered if Hannah was left behind to have the baby, whether she got to the next station in time, or whether Samuel was born on the way! On 24th Aug 1822 Henry was transferred to a Coastguard station at Castletown; he was only there a short while until 18th November when he was moved on. I notice that Elizabeth Pearn's husband Thomas Dyer was from Castletown, was he in the Coastguard by any chance? The Pearce's were transferred to Norfolk and on 18th September 1838 Henry was "Discharged and granted an allowance for one year". I have been unable to find out what this was about. By 10 March 1841 when their youngest daughter was born the are living in Stepney in Middlesex (London), and on the 1861 census Henry is listed as a superannuated custom's officer. He wrote a will on 12th July 1861, describing himself as a pensioner from her majesty's customs and died on 8th November 1861 age 65. Hannah was buried 24th May 1869 age 69 in the same grave at the City of London cemetery (Debbie Gomersall).
