James, a Labourer/Crofter & Contractor, was born c 1846 at Inverkeithny, Banff. * Born illigitimate & probably died in infancy. Jane is recorded with her Aunt, Jane W. Thain at Nether Brae, King Edward, Aberdeen in the 1861 census.

The family were living at Kirktown, Inverkeithny, Banff. in the 1871 census & later at Hillhead Of Frendraught, Forgue, Aberdeen in 1881.

The 1891 census records the family living at Hillhead Colyne, Forgue, Aberdeen. Also present is Grandaughter, Jane Ann Duguid. Jane & James were living at Chapelhill, Forgue, Aberdeen in 1901 with children, Elizabeth, Robt., Alexr., Ann, George & Jessie.
