From Beattie Mayo, Darwin NT, 1999. (All children were born in Torres Strait except Marie)

IGI records Jane being born in 1898 at Mabuaig, Thursday Island, Torres Strait, Australia but this is obviously not possible.

Early records thus far in our Ahmat Family have one Pablo Ahmat, also known as Ahmat Pablo, being born at Singapore - Malaya circa 1866. He married Seini/Jane Hunkin/Hanken/Hankin on 7 July 1903 at Thursday Island - via Queensland (ref: 03/ 001912). Jane, daughter of George Hunkin and Kirez Mageram was born on --- ---------- c1887 at Mabuiag - via Queensland. Pablo gave his occupation as a diver in 1903 - 1904 - 1907 - labourer in 1909 - diver in 1912 - 1915 - seaman in 1917 and labourer in 1917. (Dr. Anna Shnukal from the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the University of Queensland supplied the occupation and marriage information and other occupation was taken from the Alien Registration Application).

The family lived on Thursday Island - Badu - Mabuiag. Mahomet @ William PABLO b: 26 Jun 1904 Mabuiag - via Queensland (ref: 06/ 010151) Johnny PABLO b: 25 Jul 1907 Mabuiag - via Queensland (ref: 07/ 010667) Kama @ Salima @ Sally PABLO b: 26 Jan 1909 Mabuiag - via Queensland (ref: 09/ 009964) Peter Ali PABLO b: 28 Nov 1910 Mabuiag - via Queensland (ref: 10/ 010316) Ankin George PABLO b: 29 Jul 1912 Mabuiag - via Queensland (ref: 12/ 011806) Layha @ Leah PABLO b: 31 Jan 1914 Mabuiag - via Queensland (ref: 14/ 012484) Pattima @ Patricia PABLO b: 01 Nov 1915 Mabuiag - via Queensland (ref: 1915/ 015274) Marie PABLO b: 30 Dec 1917 Darwin - Northern Territory (ref. The birth dates for Nora Agale (nee Ahmat) and Leah Canuto (nee Ahmat) come from the cemetery monumental inscriptions in Queensland, with the birth date for Crossfield Ahmat coming from his headstone photo in the publication “Stars of Tagai” The Torres Strait Islanders.

Port Darwin Shipping records show Mrs. Ahmat Pablo along with 5 male children and 2 female children (The seventh paragraph states that Mrs Pabalo Ahmat travelled to Darwin with 5 male children and 2 female children - this is incorrect, She travelled with 4 male and 4 female children, her 9th child, Marie, was the only child to be born in Darwin and the 10th child, Crossfield- a son, was born in the Torres Strait, ammended by Juliette Hubbard) arriving in Darwin on 14th August 1917 from Thursday Island on board the vessel "Montoro", with the Master of the “Montoro” given as S. Mortimer. The Queensland birth records and the N.T. shipping records have the surname of the family as PABLO but for all intents and purposes the family was known as AHMAT in all the years the family lived in Darwin, which is to date. Pablo died on --- August 1935 at Darwin - N.T. and was buried at the Gardens General Cemetery on 6 August 1935 - age 64 years. Grave no. 835. The officiating clergy being Reverend Sarib.

Jane died on 07th October 1940 at ---------- - Queensland and was buried at the ---------- Cemetery - age c 53 years. (ref. 1940/ 004913). The Queensland death index has the name registered as Jane AH MATT.

A big thank you to Beattie Mayo for her help (regarding the notes above)
