NOTE
John went to Hong Kong in the 1870’s to work for Butterfield and Suisse. He worked for this firm for 12 years and then set out on his own. He survived the Boxer Rebellion, the Japanese attack on Port Arthur and the Spanish American war in Manila. John owned a newspaper – “The Hankow Daily News” – an English language newspaper.
His obituary in his paper says that he was called “Little” Andrew. I suppose due to his small stature. He was “ the most widely known man on the China coast” and called kind and genial. He is buried at Hankow.
He had two children, Gladys who married an engineer, and Berthie who married a Canadian named Molly. Berthie and Molly had three children. The eldest son was killed in WWII. The second son lives in Suffolk, England and the daughter married an American and was last known to reside in New Jersey.
