"My mother has the bible; her mother was Margaret Whyte, daughter of Jane Thain. She's the last surviving of Margaret Whyte's 8 children. She's kept in touch with the Whytes in australia (whom Val and I visited 2 years ago) and also the Freethy's in canada. Saw the Board of Trade medal when we were in Brisbane; NB it says it's "for gallantry..." which according to Spinks denotes that the person risked their own life; the other version of the BofT medal just says "for saving life at sea". Have you seen Jane Thain's grave at New Byth? If not, I can send you a photo. I moved to Strathdon a couple of years ago, and recently discovered that a second cousin lives a few miles down the road - granddaughter of Katherine Whyte. I remember when I was young going to visit her, my great-aunt kate, and being told how the peat fire had been burning for years, never allowed to go out, remember the big stack of peats at the side of the house."
