NOTE

John (1828-1898), a Farmer from Pelynt, Cornwall. Emigrated to Zealand between 1858-60. Cause of Death: Blood Poisoning / Tetenus (from standing on a rusty nail). John died from Bright's Desease. Alice (1869-1924) marr. Arthur Loxdale Frost; Fanny (1870-1944) marr. John Trewin & Ernest (1874-1941) marr. Hilda Maria Gillard.

1881 Auckland Electoral Roll has John Bryant. Occ: Farmer, resident at Brookside Farm, East Tamaki, within the Franklin North Electorate.

Family records (and the death certificate) suggest that John's full name was John Julian Bryant, however the baptism is in the name of John Bryant only. If Julian was part of his name it is likely to be Nanjulian (which was the maiden surname of his father's paternal grandmother) rather than Julian. We will never know. Mary Anne's registration of death which would have been completed by John, has her spouse as John Bryant not John Julian Bryant. I will leave the 'Julian' as is in this family tree data, but I can find little evidence [apart from the Death Certificate] to suggest that it is correct.

3. Registrar of Births Deaths & Marriages, Registration of Death. Registered 15th April 1898 John Julian Bryant, Farmer died 16th March 1898 at Grafton Road Auckland, aged 69 years. Died of Brights Disease (8 months) Oedema of Lungs (5 days) last attended on 16th March 1898 by Dr McDowell. Parents John & Maria Bryant, Farmer & Wife (her maiden name is unknown). Buried on 18th March at Otara. Born Cornwall. Been in NZ 39 years. Married at Cornwall, aged 29, to Mary Cossentine. Living children at death: 3 males (aged 35, 34 & 23) and 6 females (39, 38, 30, 30, 27 & 25).

6. Registrar of Births Deaths & Marriages. Copy of entry in Death Registrar from BDM [dd 3-Nov-2003] held. Shows Mary Ann Bryant (nee Cossentine) died aged 49 years, on 6th August 1883, with cause of death being Septiceamia [8 days] and Bronchitis. Her parents were John Cossentine and Mary Cossentine (nee Best), Farmer. She was born Lostwithiel, Cornwall, and had been in NZ 24 years. Married at Liskeard, Cornwall at age 25, to John Bryant. 3 boys & 6 girls living at time of her death.

"The discrepancies with the marriage date are unexplained. Family records have them marrying 1856-1857 with them emigrating to NZ in 1857 - their first child was born Jan 1858 on the way to NZ. FreeBDM however has their marriage registered in December qtr 1858 so I'm not sure." (From Nicky)
