NOTE
Austin, a Labourer/Farm Labourer/Stone Cutter/Carpenter, was born c 1875 at Camillan Nile of Anticrasti, Quebec, although his marr. record says 'at sea'. He died in 1948 from Heart Problems & Dropsey. His gravestone can be seen
here. It also records Phoebe's birth as USA. His parents were James Absalom Adams & Mary Leah Connon.
Mary & Selena both died in infancy. Mary's death record can be seen
here & Selena's
here. Matilda & Lillie also died in infancy but I couldn't find their death records.
"4295-98 James Absalom AUSTIN, 22, laborer, on the sea, Orangeville, s/o James Absalom & Mary, married
Phebe HAMBLY, 21, USA, Orangeville, d/o John & Margaret Ann, witn: Charles BOWLES & Maggie CLARK, both
of Orangeville, 23 March 1898 at Orangeville."
See Austin's Canadian Soldiers of World War I Draft Form
here.
The 1901 census records the family living at Austin's parents house, Mono, Cardwell, Ontario & later at Dufferin Co., Ontario in 1911. Although, Austin's birth is recorded as Jan. 71, Ontario & Phoebe's as May 73.
Some of the children's birth records can be seen here. Mary, Mary Jane, James, Matilda & Cecilia.
A picture of Phoebe & Austin can be seen here.
"Selena and Renia, I believe, had a very troublesome birth, Selena died within a month, and as Muriel (my aunt) said
Renia was not right either. She was fed on the floor until she was 8 or 9 years old, and then when Austin enlisted,
she was institutionalized for the remainder of her life. Dorothy and Clara were also twins, even though the records indicate they were born a month apart. Since we know
that's not very likely, it must be an error in recording the information, or I have misread the documents. The dates
and names were taken from Austin's journal were he recorded births ,and deaths, of relatives. He also recorded who
he worked for how much he was paid, how many animals he trapped and what he sold the pelts for.
If you look at Austin's WWI record he lists all of the living children as dependants, but does not list Dorothy, yet on
his tombstone a daughter Dorothy C. McLean is listed under his name. Perhaps!, there were not twins and this is
Clara May Adams, she married a McLean who was killed in WWII. Another question for Muriel.
I have also found out the name of the man Phobie ran off with. He was Irish and his last name was O'Leary. Muriel
remembers attending the funeral for Phobie in the early 1940's, she was with her mother Mary and sister Mildred (my
mother)."

"Renia was given up for adoption prior to WWI, She had some mental problems and was institutionalized
life, and remained there until her death. Contacted the Huronia Regional Centre, formerly known as the Orillia Asylum for Idiots, and found that
admitted there in 1917 and remained there until December 15, 1931. At that time she would have been
and she was transfered to the Oxford Regional Centre. She remained there until her death. The Oxford
Centre remained open until 1996, but her records were destroyed in 1977 ten years after her death."
