NOTE

Mary was born c 1842 at Elmsted, Kent. Her maiden name was probably 'Philpott' as there is a Mary Philpott, although spelt 'Ghilpot' in the 1851 census, born c 1844 to Thomas & Mary Philpott, of Elmsted, Kent.

Annie probably died as I couldn't find any trace of her after 1871 & Richard, a Gardener, marr. Kate Vaughn & lived at North Lodge, East Malling, Kent (1901).

The family were living at Witterdues Hall (?), Wingham, Kent (1871). Also present was a Niece, Jane Leggett, 10, Elmsted. I believe she was Mary's Niece as Jane is recorded in 1861 as the Grandaughter of Thomas & Mary Philpott, of Elmsted, Kent.

In the 1891 census the family are recorded at Evington Leeze (?), Elmsted, Kent. Later, Richard & Sarah were living at Cottage Hill St., Walcott Street, Elmsted with their son, Ernest. Interestingly, living next door was his brother, James Hopkins & his family & also a few further doors away was a distant Cousin of Richard's, Stephen Hopkins.
