He is recorded at Drum of Castle, Rayne, Aberdeen in the 1871 census with his mother & sister, Margaret. Later, he is living at Moss Side Drum of Wartle, Rayne, Aberdeen in 1881 as a widow with his children & sister Margaret, aged 44, unmarried.

Ann Reid died 21.11.1873 at Moss Side, Rayne, Aberdeen.

Samuel was living at Moss-Side of Wartle, Rayne, Aberdeen in the 1891 census with 2nd wife, Mary. She was c 1833 at Daviot, Aberdeen. Also present was son, Samuel, dau., Bathia Grant, 1879, Auchterless, Aberdeen (?) & 'Step' Grandaughter, Mary Barclay, 1880, Fyvie, Aberdeen.
