NOTE

Solomon BUTSON on 10 Nov 1793 to John BUTSON and Elizabeth, from "St Stephen in Brannel, Cornwall (1790 to 1799)". Also listed in these bap. extracts are John & Elizabeth's other children which match the IGI.

This family Emigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1840 & appear in the 1851 census of Whitby, Ontario, although it records all their birthplaces as Upper Canada. Also present was Grandson, John Hambly. Also living near by are sons, William & Nicholas & dau. Charity (Beckett).

Canadian Genealogy Index. Other trees & records suggest there was another son named Vickles but I couldn't find any evidence that Vickles was the child of Solomon & Joan. He wasn't present with the family in the 1851 census above. Infact the only evidence that a Vickles even existed is the marriage entry below.

Canadian Genealogy Index. Name: Vickles Butson Event: Married Year: 1861 Province: Ontario Place: Ontario County Source: Ontario County Marriage Register, R.G. 8 (1858-1969) Series I-6-B, Vol. 45-47, Provincial Archives of Ontario. I know that you have been skeptical of the existence of "Vickles" Butson, and you were right to be. I have finally tracked down the two references, and it is clear that it "Vickles" is nothing but a mis-reading of "Nicholas" I just posted the following on the Ancestry.com Butson surname board (http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.butson/47.1/mb.ashx ): There Never Was A "Vickles" Butson I have encountered only two references that claimed to show the existence of a "Vickles" Butson. In both cases, it was actually Solomon & Jane Butson's son Nicholas. The first was a claim that a "Vickles" Butson was listed with his family in the 1851 Canada Census. I have the image of this census page, showing the entire family, and there is no "Vickles" but there definitely is "Nicholas" who someone could have mistaken for "Vickles". He is shown with his first wife Mary Ann ADAMS, her sister Jane (spelled ADDAMS) and Nicholas' parents Solomon & Jane Butson. Interestingly, the next following family after all the Butson families is that of the MALYON family, including Mary MALYON who became Nicholas's second wife on 18 Jan 1861. And their marriage record is the source of the other supposed existence of "Vickles" Butson. Ancestry.com carries the record as Vickles Butson (Ontario County Marriage Register, R.G. 8 (1858-1969) Series I-6-B, Vol. 45-47, Provincial Archives of Ontario, with the specific marriage indicated as Vol. 1, p. 153). While I have not yet obtained the image for this record, the fact that it is the marriage of Nicholas Butson and Mary MALYON is extremely likely when you see that Ancestry.com has the exact same citation for Mary MALLIN's marriage. The numerous databases (and web sites) that have perpetuated the erroneous reading of "Vickles" when they should have read "Nicholas" must all be corrected. There never was a Vickles Butson. Joan (1792-1874), of Luxulyan, Cornwall. Dau. of Robert Keam & Mary Phillips. Thomas died aged 25.

Joan's name also recorded as Jane Kame. The 1st John died aged 2. Thomas never married. Vickles, nothing known.

A gravestone reads: "In memory of Thomas Butson, son of Solomon & Anne Butson who died Dec., 11, 18 46 aged 26 years. (sic)". (Mother's name wrong)

I got help with this line from Nestor Martinez, of Alberta, Canada, Shirley McCrea, of Canada & Others.
